During an examination a key criteria is the amount of free air / ventilation into the cabin in relation to the kilowatts of gas power / burners present.
If you have insufficient ventilation then you will be instructed to install an additional vent or vents.
Closeable or "Butterfly" vents cannot be counted towards the examination because they may be closed at the time when ventilation is needed.
Adequate ventilation must be present to suit the appliances installed on the boat (flue'd appliances included). The following formula is applied when calculating the ventilation needed (mm squared free air):
Minimum effective area (mm2) = (2200 x U) + (650 x P) + (440 x F)
U = Total input rating (kw) for all appliances without flues
F = Total input rating (kw) for all open or closed flue appliances
P = Number of people for which the compartment is designed
The ventilation requirements then need to be split equally between high and low level.
