| What Type of Antifoul should I use? |
|
|
What type of Antifouling do I need? |
 |
| Your choice of antifoul will be determined by the following: |
| Whether you use your boat in salt or fresh water, the maximum speed of your boat, whether the boat is ever on a "drying out berth" or mud mooring. |
| |
| What is a self eroding, polishing or hard scrubbable antifoul? |
A self eroding antifoul, as the name suggests erodes over the season as the boat passes through the water. The downside to an eroding antifoul is that abrasion or speed will rub or wash it off.
A polishing antifoul is a product that will erode, but to a lesser extent and so is suitable for faster boats (up to 25 knots). The main characteristic of an eroding antifoul is that the resin is packed with a biocide that discourages fungal and fouling growth. The resin breaks down throughout the season exposing fresh biocide (hence inhibiting / preventing growth), this has the added advantage that you don't end up with layers and layers of old antifoul (antifouling) on the hull.
A hard scrubbable antifoul will resist mild abrasion such as a drying out mooring, bankside mooring in shallows (e.g a muddy river bank & bed) and speeds in excess of 25 knots. The resin of a hard scrubbable antifoul is designed to erode very little, but without getting too bogged down in the science of it all the chemical composition of the paint (antifouling) ensures that biocide is continually exposed to the water so that fungal and fouling growth is inhibited / prevented. |
| |
| What should I remember when antifouling? |
| 1) |
If you do not have an existing antifoul, or are unsure what antifoul has already been applied, then using a suitable primer will ensure good adhesion to an unpainted surface, or provide a barrier between dissimilar antifouls. |
| 2) |
Never dry sand an antifoul / antifouling paint: if inhaled, the dust is extremely harmful to health. |
| 3) |
Make a note of how long the antifouling can be applied prior to immersion (this can vary from days to months). |
| 4) |
Apply more antifoul where the hull will receive most wear (from water as well as abrasion), particularly the bow and waterline. |
| 5) |
Be aware that temperature of the air, paint and surface being coated will affect drying and overcoating times. |
| 6) |
Always read the instructions on the tin of antifoul or antifouling product prior to use. |
| 7) |
For clear, detailed and concise information regarding any product, always refer to the manufacturers website or published material. |
